The latest reports claim that Botswana could become Africa’s first fully vaccinated country after the country’s health officials agreed to get enough COVID-19 vaccine injections that would cover the nation’s whole adult population.
Botswana health official reach an agreement to get around 1.9 million vaccine doses – enough to potentially make the country the first country in Africa to have all of its population vaccinated. Botswana’s Presidential COVID-19 Task Force member, Mosepele Mosepele made the announcement this week.
Last month, Botswana received 60,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine from India and the COVAX facility. Mosepele was pleased to note that around 47,160 individuals had received the jab since March 26.
However, he did not mention when the doses were set to be delivered. The biggest shipment which is of around 1.1 million doses is to be sent by the U.S. manufacturer Johnson & Johnson.
Poor and other nations around the world are set to be given vaccines by the Serum Institute of India, which has also been backed by the World Health Organisation.
Botswana's minister of presidential affairs, Kabo Morwaeng encouraged Botswana’s population to get vaccinated, and continued to say that the country’s health officials "will continue to ascertain that the vaccines we receive are safe for use by all of us."
